Failed iPhone 2.1 Update

21 09 2008

If you have an iPhone and if you have recently updated to 2.1 (without doing the PWNAGE crack first), you may find that your iPhone will only let you restore it with “legit” firmware and that you’ll need to go out and purchase an authorized iPhone Telco Plan… but All is NOT lost !…

Read on to discover my solution to restoring your iPhone from a failed 2.1 firmware update.

So you’ve just broken your favourite toy…. Here’s what I had to do to restore an iPhone (2G) from such a problem, after searching the net for numerous hours and trying out almost every possible “fix” I found this is the only process that worked.

1. Uninstall iTunes 8 or 7.7 and reinstall iTunes 7.5, you can find previous versions of iTunes at this very handy website, glad I found it… OldApps.

Note: Rename or delete your existing iTunes library if you were using a newer version of iTunes, as the older version won’t recognise it, your iTunes library can be found here (by default)…

C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl

2. Download the iPhone 1.1.4 Firmware update, you can download all the old iPhone Firmware updates from here, iPhone Firmware

3. Connect your iPhone to your PC using the USB cable and turn off your iPhone, then follow the below steps to get your iPhone into DFU mode.
a. Hold down the Power Button for 5 seconds
b. Hold down the Power and Home Buttons for 10 seconds.
c. Release the Power Button BUT keep holding down the Home Button for 30 seconds.

Your iPhone should now be in DFU Restore mode (Blank screen, no connect to iTunes “icon”)

4. Hold down the Shift key and Click the Restore Button in iTunes (for Windows, Ctrl Option for MAC), now browse and select the 1.1.4 Firmware update that you have downloaded previously (In Step 2 – above).

You may get an error when iTunes is verifying the 1.1.4 Firmware update, DON’T WORRY, if you get the “connect to iTunes icon” after doing the update this is OK, (at first I thought I was screwed again at this point) Please read on…

5. Download ZiPhone here and use it to “Jailbreak and Unlock” your iPhone. Once this has been completed your iPhone should now be fully functioning with the 1.1.4 Firmware loaded onto it.

6. Now all that’s left to do is too Restore your iPhone to 2.1 again, you can use a pre-PWNAGE’d version of the 2.1 Firmware update if you don’t have access to a MAC and the PWNAGE software, these can be found here

Thanks to everyone who’s written similar blogs – I hope this blog will help others to restore their iPhone’s when iPhone’s “GO BAD”.
